On 17th May 2022, the School of Science, Engineering and Health held a virtual stakeholders forum to discuss the proposed Master of Health (MPH) curriculum of Daystar University.
Present at the meeting was the Vice-chancellor Prof. Laban P. Ayiro, DVC Academic, Research and Student Affairs, Prof. Faith Nguru, DVC Finance, Administration and Planning, Prof. Muturi Wachira, the Principal Nairobi Campus, Prof. Michael Bowen, Dean School of Science Engineering and Health Prof. Martha Kiarie, the HoD-Public Health and MHP lead person, Dr. Emmanuel Wamalwa, and members of Senate and Management.
External programme reviewers present included Dr. Monica Bitok, the Global Inclusive Eye Health Advisor of Christian Blind Mission, Ms. Providence Kiptoo, Senior Lecturer, Moi University School of Public Health, and Dr. Susan Ontiri, Senior Technical Advisor, Population Services International. Others present were Mrs. Sylvia Khamati Logendo of Danish Red Cross, Dr. Vincent Were of KEMRI, Doyle Leonard of Ministry of Health, Ms. Jemimah Kuta of Council of Governors Committee on Health, Dr. Miriam Ngure of Kenya Red Cross Society, and Harriet Shiundu from the Ministry of Education.
The Vice-chancellor, Prof Laban Ayiro said he expected a Master of Public Health programme that depicts global perspective and brings out communication and leadership skills, among other features.
The programme Leader, Dr. Emmanuel Wamalwa said the programme will equip students with essential Public Health knowledge and skills for policy planning, analysis and research. He said that the Master of Public Health programme is at the epicenter for human health and development and is the strong link to human development, SDGs and Vision 2030.
“This programme will produce Public health professionals with both technical and moral capacity to address societal challenges through traditional and innovative methodologies,” said Dr. Wamalwa.
The Dean, School of Science Engineering and Health, Prof. Martha Kiarie said the curriculum was rich with the inclusion of ethics, communication, research and evidence-based public health practices.
The external curriculum reviewers expressed their satisfaction with the fact that their recommendations and suggestions were incorporated in the programme for improvement of the said curriculum.
The MPH programme is ready for presentation to the University Senate before being submitted to the Commission of University Education.
