In an interview with the media on August 28, 2024, the Daystar University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laban P. Ayiro gave his views on the new University Funding Model.
Prof. Ayiro opined that the new funding model needed time to incubate so that stakeholders can determine what needs to be re-fashioned.
“Universities have not maximally exploited the potential of revenue generation and that’s why the attempt at entrepreneurship, innovation and commercialization should take universities to where they want to be”, he said.
Prof. Ayiro spoke during the 3rd Kenya Network of Entrepreneurial Institutions Leaders Council meeting held on August 28, 2024, in Mombasa.
He noted that a lot of resources were available globally which Kenyans can tap into rather than wait for the national treasury to support both the recurrent and development budgets.
“My advice [is we] have ‘private’ oriented mindsets because resources from the government are diminishing yet Kenyans need university education,” he said.
