On Monday 14th August 2023, Daystar University Vice Chancellor Prof. Laban Ayiro met with the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Interior and National Administration, State Department for Correctional Services, Ms. Salome Wairimu Muhia-Beacco, to present planned research seeking to collect educational demographics data from Correctional centres in Kenya.
Also present was Brigadier (Rtr) John Kebaso Warioba, Commissioner General Prisons Service, and other members of the research team from the Prisons Service.
Prof. Ayiro was accompanied by his research team which included Dr. Caroline Ayuya, Ms. Grace Mbogo-Liyai and Mr. Boaz Bichage.
The PS gave her blessing for the research to continue. The next phase succeeding the already conducted pre-test and trial run is data collection in all the correctional Centres in Kenya.
This survey will bridge the gap between policy and practice in regard to educational demographics for offenders and correctional practitioners. It will provide evidence for appropriate evidence-based decision making.
The lived experience of both the offenders and practitioners will inform evidence on how best higher education can be provided and sustained in correctional services.
The findings will inform allocation of resources as appropriate in Correctional Services and provide pathways for market oriented educational programs that meet the needs of the offenders. This will enhance offender employability upon their reentry and reintegration into the community and thereby reduce recidivism and overcrowding in correctional institutions.
