Student Leaders’ Retreat makes a raft of resolutions

[Mombasa, June 30, 2024] Daystar University Enterprises Limited (DEL), the business arm of the University, plans to add two new buses to its fleet of four.   DEL also committed to rebrand it’s two old buses to align with the University’s branding protocols.

[Mombasa, June 30, 2024] Daystar University Enterprises Limited (DEL), the business arm of the University, plans to add two new buses to its fleet of four.   DEL also committed to rebrand it’s two old buses to align with the University’s branding protocols.

These were among a raft of resolutions made during the just ended Student Leaders’ retreat held at Travellers’ Beach Hotel in Mombasa, from 28th -30th June 2024.

Other resolutions made for implementation were:

  1. The University’s PhD holders will be allowed opportunities to teach undergraduate classes in area of specialization in order to improve the undergraduate programs.
  2. the University will facilitate finances for faculty capacity building in Problem Based Learning in order to improve teaching and learning.
  3. the University will evaluate the current Problem Based Learning and submit a report on the same to Senate
  4. the University will action the automation of cafeteria and introduce the Pay as you Eat system in the cafeteria in the coming financial year.
  5. the University will not increase fees for the current students during in next financial year.
  6. the University will finalize the rebranding and upgrading of all University buses before the end of the year and purchase two more buses - 67 and 33 seater.
  7. the University will introduce automated transport payment system in the next financial year.
  8. the University will continue the renovation of Freedom Base in the range of an additional Ksh 4m-7m and also renovate the DULOUS cottages and kitchen.
  9.  the University will continue the renovation of the Cafeteria at Main Campus.
  10. student leaders will take up the responsibility of landscaping or creating a Botanical garden at the space between David Musau Mumama Learning Complex and the dam.
  11. the University will expand the Agricultural Project and Fence off an agricultural area for additional goats and cattle.
  12. the University will migrate the dumping site from the gate to the area around the poultry house.
  13. the University will secure the Daystar title deed for the 30 acres donated by Musau Mumama.
  14. the University will continue the perimeter wall of the Daystar land at the Main Campus as a way of securing the land and re-do the main gate /entrance of the campus.
  15. the University will provide more water dispensing points around the Main Campus and embark on water bottling project.
  16. the University will renovate the Main Campus hostels to ensure cooking gas is  installed outside the hostels.
  17. the University will rework the sports fields including the basketball pitches, and renovate the ablution blocks near the soccer field and other sports fields.
  18. the University will embark on the School of Nursing phase II
  19.   the University will facilitate Wi-Fi modernization- phase II
  20. the University will invest in Chapel equipment.
  21. the University will finalize the process of ISO certification and ensure implementation.
  22. the University will refurbish and re-furnish the Main Campus TV room.
  23. the University will work on the reconstruction roof of the DAC building at the Nairobi campus.
  24. the University will come up with an I-Hub innovation Centre with a capacity of – 1,000 seater at the Nairobi Campus.
  25. the University will procure new computers for the Library.  30 computers had been donated.
  26. the University will introduce and implement the Elec Tracker system for laptops and guest management as a security measure.
  27. the University will introduce sniffer dogs periodically to curb drug peddling in both campuses.
  28. the University will discuss way forward on introduction of congress activities budget vote under HODs.
  29. the University will renovate the reception areas in both campuses in the next financial year.
  30. the University will renovate the SBE block and procure suitable furniture for classrooms at the Main Campus.
  31. the University will do a review of the current medical cover for students and propose recommendations.
  32. the University will hire the ambulance personnel
  33. the University will consult and negotiate the emergency fee of Ksh 2,000/- for students who are not under the Daystar University medical cover.

The Student Leaders’ annual retreat was intended to induct the newly elected DUSA Council and Congress leaders into the University’s operations for improved efficiency. 

The retreat was organized by the Dean of Students under the oversight of the DVC- Academic, Research and Student Affairs Prof. Faith Nguru, and was chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laban P. Ayiro.

Also in attendance to facilitate the induction process were the DVC Finance, Administration and Planning Prof. Muturi Wachira, The Principal Nairobi Campus Prof. Michael Bowen, The University Registrar Prof. Paul Mbutu, Chief Manager Finance CPA Phyllis Mutua, Chief Manager Human Resources Mr. Pius Muia, The University Chaplain Rev. Miano Weche and pastoral assistant Mr. Felix Simotwo, the Ag. University Services Manager Ms. Sonia Mutende, Security Coordinator Mr. Chris Wekesa, the Corporate Affairs and Marketing Manager Ms. Damaris Kimilu.  The Secretariat was supported by Associate Deans Ms. Ann Wachira, Mrs. Grace Karanja, Ms. Susan Boto; and staff from the executive office Mrs. Eunice Ndungu-Muriithi, Ms. Grace Mbogo-Liyai and Ms. Magdaline Kiyeng.
