[Athi River - Friday 24th May, 2024] The Dean, School of Science, Engineering and Health Prof. Martha Kiarie, hosted guests from Taylor University in USA, at the Main Campus Athi River. 

Prof. Kiarie was accompanied by the HoD, Department of Science Dr. Jane Kimathi, the HoD, Department of Computer Science Ms. Zipporah Mwololo, and lecturers: Mr. Daniel Njeru, Mr. Joshua Okemwa, Dr. Monica Opiyo, Mrs. Faith Mburu, Mr. Samuel Kiranga and Mr.  Antony Wambua.

During the meeting, the School sought the collaborative support of Taylor University in the development of a proposed diploma programme in mechanical engineering.

The two teams also discussed possible collaboration in the following areas:

  1. Curriculum development and knowledge sharing through conferences.
  2. Staff and student Exchange program was also put into consideration.
  3. Research and publication, including training students and staff to do research work.

“We encourage our students to be innovative when it comes to engineering so that they can start businesses or get employed before they graduate, so that they can become competitive in the world,” said Prof. Kiarie.

Citing a recent market survey, Prof. Kiarie revealed there was need for a diploma in Engineering in Kenya.

According to Mr. Daniel Njeru, the diploma programme, which aims to produce professionals in the field of engineering, will be based on the authority of the Bible. He noted that the Diploma in Engineering will be launched once it is approved by the University Senate, Commission for University Education and Engineering Board of Kenya.

Some of the proposed units in the programme include Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Drawing, Physical Science, and Mechanical Science among others. The programme aims to concentrate mostly in electrical power systems, instrumentation and control electrical engineering.

The Taylor University team promised to collaborate with Daystar University to conceptualize and develop the diploma programme.

 “We are ready to help Daystar University in every aspect for  the Engineering Diploma programme to go the world and for it to become competitive”, said Daniella lookinghill, the Taylor University team leader.

The meeting also encouraged Investment in Science Technology Engineering and mathematics.

Daniella from Taylor University also encouraged project collaboration between Daystar University students and Taylor University. She underscored the need for accountability for engineering projects such as electricity installations and other critical projects.

During the visit, Taylor University planted trees at Athi River Campus, led by Sonia Mutende and Boaz Bichage.
