June 11, 2024 student innovators from Daystar University met with representatives of the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) to present their projects.

During the meeting, KeNIA representatives Dennis Mallui and Ann Wandera shared insights on the agency's role in supporting entrepreneurship and research commercialization while Daystar University presented its approach to nurturing staff and innovations through its recently established Directorate of Research, Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship (D-RICE).  The students later met with KeNIA officials to present their innovative ideas.

Wenslous Otema Egesa, a fourth-year Computer Science Major, jointly with Noan Ndombi, a fourth-year Communication Major/Computer Science Minor, introduced "Ishara," an AI-powered software that translates Kenyan languages into sign language through text and speech, and vice versa. Their goal is to enhance communication and inclusivity in the healthcare sector, ensuring deaf patients can access confidential consultations.

John Nderitu, a final year also a Computer Science Major student presented "Eye Locker," a mobile App that connects local businesses with consumers, driving traffic and visibility to small enterprises that often struggle to compete with larger organizations.

Rodney Wanje, a third-year Computer Science Major student and the current president of Daystar Information Technology Association (DITA) presented "Recycle Rush," a project aimed at encouraging proper plastic disposal through smart bins, a system that rewards users with cash for their recycling efforts.

The meeting provided a platform for student innovators to gain insights into the KeNIA Innovation Funding Framework.  The KeNIA representatives committed to support the university's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laban P. Ayiro, the Director of Academic Affairs, Prof. Samuel Muriithi emphasized the importance of nurturing innovative ideas, stating, "Money follows ideas. You must first have an idea of what you want to do, then money will follow."

While giving the devotion, the Assistant Chaplain Pastor Rachel Ngugi, emphasized on the importance of integrating Christian values into innovation.  The event underscored Daystar University's dedication to fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, empowering students to develop solutions that address real-world challenges and drive economic growth.
