The Vice-chancellor Prof. Laban Ayiro has called for patience and calm as security agencies carry out investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the demise of Ms. Mercy Jerono Kwambai, a female first year student who died in the early morning hours of Saturday, 9th September 2023.
The Vice-chancellor spoke during the memorial service of the deceased student held at the Nairobi Campus, DAC Auditorium, on 14th September 2023.
While condoling the family and mourners present, Prof. Ayiro expressed deep pain for the loss of Mercy. “Because the family had entrusted her to me, she was my daughter and I feel the pain of a father," he said. He urged members of the public to stop speculating and rather wait for investigations to be completed.
Earlier on, the VC addressed the University community on Tuesday 12th September, during chapel service at Daystar Main Campus Athi River.
Mercy Jerono was among more than 1,500 students admitted for the September 2023 Intake, and was enrolled to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
The memorial service was attended by Mercy's immediate family and friends, University management, staff, faculty and students. We continue to pray for the family and the University fraternity for peace and comfort to prevail.
Mercy Jerono will be laid to rest this Saturday 16th September in Elgeiyo Marakwet.
Since the unfortunate incident occurred, the University has rolled out trauma counselling, through Student Affairs and Human Resource departments, for students and staff who were closely involved.
