As we're aware, 24 families fell victim to a fire outbreak last night at the Athi River off-Campus community.  The University responded fast by extending temporary accommodation and meals to some of the affected, among them 10 minors.

 

Among the affected are six members of DEL staff and other community members.  No injuries were reported and no student was affected by the inferno that gutted down several shops and residential houses.

 

Items urgently needed include clothing for men, women and children, beddings, utensils, foodstuffs, soaps and personal care products.  

 

The Deputy Vice-chancellor in charge of Finance, Administration and Planning (DVC-FAP) Prof. Muturi Wachira has appealed to University community members to support the victims with both material and financial donations.  Material donations should be channeled through the Corporate Affairs Department at the PAC Reception, Main Campus Athi River, while financial donations should be given through the Daystar MPESA Paybill 209800, Account: Fire-Your Name.

 

 

Since last night, several government officials have visited to express solidarity with the effected, among them the local Member of County Assembly (MCA) Mr. Francis Kavyu Wambua, Machakos County Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Disaster / Devolution Dr. Consolata Mutisya, and the Governor Hon. Wavinya Ndeti.  Hon. Ndeti thanked Daystar University for extending care to the community.
