Prof. Laban Ayiro Warmly Received by the Daystar Community
The entire month of March 2019 has been full of excitement and activity as the Daystar Community received and inducted Prof. Laban P. Ayiro, into office.
Prof. Ayiro took up his new appointment as the 4th Vice-Chancellor on 1st March and was installed into Office on March 29.
His entry point was the Daystar Nairobi Campus where he was received by the Chair of the University Council Prof. Henry Thairu Chair of the Finance Committee of Council Mr. Desmond Mtula, Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of Council CPA Donald Odera, Chair of Human Resource Committee of Council Mrs. Nyambura Musyimi, and the outgoing Ag. Vice-Chancellor Prof. James Kombo.
During the introductory siting, Prof. Ayiro was inducted into the University’s Vision, Mission and Core values. He also received core documents and reports of the University among them the Charter, Statutes, Policies, Establishment and Structure, Strategic Plan 2017-2021, the Taskforce Report and its Implementation Matrix, and the Forensic Investigation Report.
Later he was given a guided tour of the Nairobi Campus and the School of Law by his predecessor, the outgoing Ag. Vice-Chancellor Prof. James Kombo and the Corporate Affairs Manager Mrs. Damaris Kimilu.
Since then, Prof. Ayiro has attended numerous meetings with University stakeholder groups key among them the co-Founders Dr. Donald and Mrs. Faye Smith, the Senate, Management Board, academic Schools, Departments, Directorates, staff and student leadership officials.
During the same period, he has extensively toured both the Athi River and Nairobi campuses to familiarize himself with the facilities, and also addressed the university community on several occasions during chapel times.
He was officially introduced to the Athi River Campus Community during the Chapel Service on March 5, and to the Nairobi Campus on March 7.
Speaking to the community, Prof. Ayiro invited the support of Faculty, staff and students in his effort to restore Daystar to its former glory. He committed total reliance on God, and submission to discipleship by the University Chaplaincy.
“In conduct and behavior I will be disciple number One. I commit myself to make Daystar University a University of choice,” he underscored.
Amidst deafening cheers by the students, Prof. Ayiro revealed that he would make his residence near the Athi River Campus so that he could nurture the young undergraduate students.
“I cannot run the main campus from Nairobi; I am already looking for a suitable house around the campus,” said the VC, further promising to make the Athi River Campus an oasis of life and intellectual marketplace.
On stewardship he said, “I will be a good custodian of your resources.”
During an interview with the student radio station Shine FM 103.1, Prof. Ayiro said that his focus would be on quality education, values and spirituality.
He further promised to reposition the School of Communication as Daystar’s niche programme by revamping the communication studios through providing the latest technology. Making observations during the induction month, the Daystar University Students Association (DUSA) President for Nairobi Campus Mr. Aloys Lavern Otieno noted that the new Vice-Chancellor was moving in the right direction. Prof. Ayiro also appealed for the support of DUSA Executive in moving the University forward.
Expressing his passion for sports, the Vice-Chancellor promised to improve the sports facilities at Athi River campus.
On his part, the outgoing Ag. VC. Prof James Kombo appreciated the DUSA Executive saying that in his tenure as the Ag. Vice-Chancellor and previously DVC Academic Affairs, he had worked very well with the Student Government.
The Council Chair Prof. Henry Thairu thanked the Corporate Affairs Manager for working closely with the outgoing Ag Vice-Chancellor Prof. James Kombo to ensure that Prof. Ayiro’s induction process was a success.
He revealed that the Council will start conversations with various organs of the University including DUSA, faculty, staff, students, parents, Daystar US, and Alumni to receive their inputs towards “a New Dawn for Daystar University.”
The VC induction programme culminated with his installation as the 4th Vice-Chancellor of Daystar University on 29th March.
