Council Appoints Prof. Ayiro Fourth VC of Daystar University
On Friday, February 22, 2019, the Chairman of Daystar University Council announced the appointment of Prof. Laban Peter Ayiro as the Fourth Vice-Chancellor of Daystar University.
Prof. Ayiro emerged top from among three candidates who made presentations to a Daystar University Stakeholders Forum held in Nairobi on February 15. The decision to appoint Prof. Laban Ayiro was taken by a full Council on Friday February 22, 2019.
The appointment of Prof. Laban Ayiro resulted from a rigorous search process that began in August 2018 soon after the inauguration of the new Council on July 31, and culminated with a Stakeholders Forum held in Nairobi on February 15. The three finalists were drawn from 30 applicants who expressed interest in the position through a Human Resource Consultant, Manpower Services (Kenya) Limited.
Prof. Ayiro is expected to take up his new appointment on March 1, 2019. The University Council has prepared an elaborate one-month induction programme to be steered by the Ag. Vice-Chancellor Prof. James Kombo, culminating with a formal installation into Office.
Prof. Ayiro is a Full Professor of Research Methods at Moi University where he also served as the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Director of Quality Assurance, and DVC Administration and Planning. He also has had teaching engagements at Indiana University in USA and the Nelson Mandela University in RSA.
Prof. Laban Ayiro has over 30 years’ experience in educational management, administration and leadership including serving as Provincial Director of Education, Deputy Director and Senior Deputy Director of Education at the Kenya Education Management Institute, Senior Deputy Director for Policy and Planning at the Ministry of Education; and Senior Deputy Director for Research and Curriculum Development at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development.
He has notable involvement in Policy Development and Implementation at the highest level in the education sector.
In 2011, Prof. Ayiro was awarded Senior Fulbright Fellowship for research and teaching at Texas A&M University by the American Government.
Prof. Ayiro has track record in research and publication with over thirty publications.
Currently he is the National External Evaluator of the Competency Based Curriculum that has just been rolled out by UNICEF/Government of Kenya on consultancy basis.
Prof. Ayiro is a leading consultant for UNICEF and the World Bank Group (WBG) on Higher Education Reforms and Economics of Higher education in Kenya, Organizational Leadership and Emotional Intelligence.
With Prof. Ayiro’s appointment, Daystar stands to greatly benefit from his wide range of skills in leadership development, research, big data analysis, strategic planning and management, entrepreneurship, organizational capacity building, team building, decision making and problem solving. He also is grounded with skills in the application of ICT in teaching instruction (pedagogy). He is a peer-reviewer for the Commission of University Education in Kenya and an external examiner for several universities both nationally and internationally.
On matters of faith, Prof. Ayiro is a Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) faithful. Since moving to Moi University in 2010, Prof. Ayiro has been a congregant of West Valley PAG Church in Eldoret where he serves on the Board of Deacons. Previously, he worshiped at Madaraka PAG Church in Nairobi and also attended CITAM Parklands. He is actively involved with the PAG Mission Headquarters in Nyang’ori, where he has chaired the Panel for the competitive selection of the current Principal of the Pentecostal Bible College-Nyang’ori. He is also the Chairperson of the committee currently working on the establishment of the PAG University of East Africa as a constituent college of the Pan African Christian University.
