General Summary

Sr. Prof. Agnes Lucy Lando, an Associate Professor of Communication and Media Studies, is the Deputy Head of Communication Department in the School of Communication and Language at Daystar University. Prof. Lando obtained her PhD in Social Communication from The Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, in 2008. In October 2016, Sr. Prof. Lando became the first African to be elected Board Member-at-Large of the International Communication Association (ICA), a global body that brings together communication scholars, practitioners and researchers. Sr. Lando also steered a team that successfully held the first ICA regional conference in Africa, Nairobi, in October 2016. Prof. Lando is also a Member and treasurer of the Ethics and Review Board of Daystar University; as well as University Council Member, and an external Examiner for a number of Universities, locally and internationally.

Published Works

Sr. Prof. Lando has published articles in Communication Ethics, Higher Education in Africa, the idea of a Catholic University in the 21st century, The Critical Role of Crisis Communication Plan in Corporations’ Crises Preparedness and Management, Rumours on Social Media and their implications on individuals and society; the subtle 2013 Post-Election Violence in Kenya; and The importance of interfaith dialog in the workplace for achieving organizational goals, and lately, a Premier reference book on Impact of Communication and the Media on Ethnic Conflict.

Her writings contribute to the growing scholarship on media ethics, higher education, media studies, new media and communication theory in the African context and beyond. In June 2013, her co-authored paper “Retesting Cultivation Theory on the Origins, Causes, and Predictors of Aggression: The Case of Pre and Post Genocide Rwanda” won the 2013 George Gerbner Excellence Award in Budapest, Hungary.

Community Service

In an attempt to provide a lasting solution to the perennial school fees plight of a number of MA Communication students of Daystar University, on 14th March 2013 we (Sr. Lando and some MA Communication students) founded Master Communicators Welfare Association (MCWA) that aims at raising money and partially sponsoring financially challenged but academically able MA Communication students of Daystar University {cf: http://www.mcwa-kenya.com/}. This fund is 100% student run, under her guidance as their patroness.

 

Professional Association

Prof. Lando is a member of various national, regional and international communication academic bodies, such as ICA, IAMCR, IALIC, NCA, EACA; and has presented peer-reviewed papers both locally and internationally.

  • Her research interests are in Media studies, Communication theory, Crisis Communication, and Communication Ethics.
  • Her researches have attracted local and international research grants.
